Fall Fun!

The students have been enjoying all of the special activities with our Fall and October themes! Here's a little peek at some favorite projects!

The class enjoyed learning about the legend of Johnny Appleseed and all about the life cycle of an apple during the month of September. Our really tall projects, for this tall tale genre study, were about main idea and supporting details. This helps us better understand what we read!

We learned about famous explorer Christopher Columbus. The students created a bubble map and included these important facts in their writing pieces.

We made glittery bats during our genre unit with the story Stellaluna!

The students have been reading nonfiction and learning about nonfiction text features like photographs, captions and diagrams with our pumpkin theme. The class is working on a lunch bag mini-book all about the life cycle of a pumpkin! We viewed each stage in real photographs.

This week our genre study continues with one my all-time favorite stories, Boris and Bella. It's a great book about two monsters who are very different. In the end, they find they have some things in common and learn to be tolerant of, and even like one another!

If you'd like to view a neat animated version at home, here is a link to a very creative YouTube video. Click on the book cover above to take you there! :)

Miscellaneous Math

We are well underway with our new math series. Each day we try to incorporate some type of interactive component with the lesson or skill. Here is a random post of miscellaneous math from the last several weeks!

The class enjoyed ten pair practice with Skittles and ten frame work mats!

Tens and ones place value lessons started with Unifix cubes and laminated folders as work mats! The students used expanders and worked with a partner to record the tens and ones they represented with cubes.

This is what a page in our math journal workbook looks like!

These are bead counters on number tracks. The lesson was on beginning with the nearest ten and counting on by ones.

We played a fun game of I Have, Who Has? for place value with base ten blocks.

Manipulatives of all shapes and sizes were used in a partner activity to compare handfuls using the symbols for greater than and less than.

This is an up hill, down hill model for rounding to the nearest ten.

In Guess my Number, students were given clues about the mystery number such as whether it was even or odd and clues about the digits in the tens and ones place.

This was a fun sorting game to practice place value!

The class practiced moving along a hundred chart by increments of tens and ones with a partner dice game.

The children ordered three digit numbers during this playing card activity.

Partner games are always a big hit!

Students enjoyed this cut and paste activity for ordering numbers from least to greatest!

We are learning to tell time to five minute intervals. This student is modeling with the teacher's Judy clock. The children enjoy using their small Judy clocks for more practice!

Coming soon...interactive math notebooks!

Walk for Funds Fun!

The class had a blast at the Walk for Funds! Thank you to the many families who contributed with pledges for this great fundraising event! It was hard to capture many "still" children for this photo shoot, so here are the pictures I was able to get!

Thanks PTO for this fun day and for our new second grade shirts!
